Lesson 105 derived the ring buffer as the inevitable structure for preserving perception in time. This lesson describes how that structure operates — the observation chain that gives the corpus its temporal depth.
The edge
The ring that touches reality — the fastest, the one at the perimeter — is called S. The surface. The edge cog.
S captures non-judgmentally. Everything that arrives is written. No filtering. No evaluation. No decision about what matters. The contact happens, the imprint is held, and S moves on to the next contact. This is the discipline of the edge: receive and hold. Nothing more.
Between the moment an imprint arrives on S and the moment S wraps and that position is needed for a new imprint, there is a window. An opportunity. The imprint is there, available for examination. The opportunity does not demand action. It does not require a decision. It offers a choice — examine or don't, act or don't. But the opportunity is always present, for every imprint, for the duration of its time on the edge.
The custodial observers
Beyond S, there are other cogs: M, H, D, W. Minute, hour, day, week. These cogs do not touch reality. They never receive raw perception. They are not storage tiers. They are observers.
Each one has a custodial timeframe — a watch. During that watch, the cog observes what is happening on the cog above it and records its own report of what it witnessed.
M reads from S. During its one-minute watch, M observes the imprints flowing through S and writes its own record — what it saw, what it noted, what was present during that minute. When the minute ends, M's report is complete. A new minute begins. A new watch.
H reads from M. Not from S. During its one-hour watch, H observes the reports M produced and writes its own record of what those sixty minutes contained. H never sees the raw imprints on S. H sees M's account of them.
D reads from H. Twenty-four hours of H's reports, observed and recorded as D's account of the day.
W reads from D. Seven days of D's reports, observed and recorded as W's account of the week.
The chain is observation, not promotion
Nothing moves from S to M. Nothing is promoted from M to H. The cogs do not receive data from each other. They read from each other. Each cog observes the one above it during its custodial window and writes its own independent record.
M's report is not a compressed version of S. It is M's account of what S held during that minute. H's report is not a summary of M. It is H's account of what M reported during that hour. Each cog produces its own truth from its own observation at its own timescale.
This distinction matters. Promotion implies the data changes hands — leaves one place, arrives at another. That is not what happens. The imprints on S stay on S until S wraps. M reads them while they are there and writes its own record in its own ring. The original is not consumed. The original is not moved. The original remains on the edge until the edge naturally reclaims the space.
Longevity
There is a separate path for raw imprints that need to survive beyond S's natural window. If a perception frame on S needs more time — more life — it can be moved to a larger ring at the same resolution, or to archive where there is no wrapping at all.
This is not aggregation. This is longevity. The frame stays raw. The imprint stays unaltered. It just gets a larger container or a permanent one. The witness lives longer.
Longevity and observation are independent paths. Longevity extends the life of the raw imprint. Observation produces reports at successive timescales. They serve different purposes. They do not interfere with each other.
The model
Assemble the pieces:
S — the edge cog. Captures reality non-judgmentally. Every imprint offers an opportunity for examination during its time on the ring. S is the only cog that touches the outside world.
M, H, D, W — custodial observers. Each one reads from the cog before it during its watch and writes its own report. The chain is sequential: S → M → H → D → W. Nothing is promoted. Everything is observed and independently recorded.
Longevity path — raw frames on S that need extended life promote to larger rings or archive. Same resolution. More time.
Node sovereignty — each source of perception gets its own S, its own observation chain, its own longevity path. Node by node by node. One structure. One source. One truth.
